How to check a Florida contractor license
- Get the license number. Florida generally requires it on contracts and ads. It starts with letters like CGC, CBC, CRC, CCC, CFC, CAC or EC.
- Look it up. Search it here, then verify on myfloridalicense.com, the official DBPR lookup.
- Check status. You want current and active. Inactive, delinquent, suspended or revoked means stop and ask questions.
- Check the license type fits the job. A roofing license generally isn't for a kitchen remodel. See the trade pages, and ask your building department if unsure.
- Certified vs registered. Certified licenses (C… codes) are statewide. Registered licenses (R… codes) are limited to the local areas where the contractor holds a local license.
- Check the name matches. The business on your contract should match the license or be a business the licensee qualifies.
- Look for discipline. We show final orders from DBPR reports. Open complaints are confidential.
- Ask for insurance. Get liability and workers' comp certificates sent from the insurer.
Informational only, not legal advice. Contractor licensing in Florida is governed by Florida Statutes chapter 489 and DBPR rules, which can change. DBPR is the official source.
